🌱 Green RSE Job Descriptions
The Green RSE Special Interest Group (SIG) is working to better define how people in research software engineering roles can contribute to reducing the environmental impact of digital research.
We are particularly interested in understanding how sustainability is already being reflected in RSE job descriptions.
What We’re Looking For
We are collecting examples of RSE job descriptions that include any element of environmental sustainability.
These do not need to be explicitly labelled as “Green RSE” roles. We are interested in any references to sustainability, such as:
- Energy-efficient coding practices
- Performance profiling and optimisation
- Sustainable procurement decisions
- Monitoring or reducing computational impact
- Environmental awareness in responsibilities or skills
Even a single bullet point in a job description is valuable.
Why This Matters
By gathering these examples, we aim to:
- Highlight how sustainability is already being embedded in RSE roles
- Share best practice across the community
- Support organisations in developing greener job descriptions
- Contribute to future “green” sections in RSE job description templates
Contribute Your Example
If your organisation has hired — or is currently hiring — for an RSE role that includes any element of environmental sustainability, we would greatly appreciate you sharing it.
Your contribution will help shape how sustainability is recognised and embedded within research software engineering roles.
