Colaborations Workshop

Kirsty and Loïc are contributing to a session led by Andy Turner (EPCC) at the SSI’s Collaborations Workshop 2025 (CW25). The interactive session aims to work with researchers to improve their carbon literacy, helping them better understand the magnitude and impact of different emission levels and activities.

RSECon25

RSECon25 we’ve submitted an abstract for another community session at RSECon25. Keep an eye out for updates!

Launch Event

The Green RSE SIG officially launched on January 16, 2025, with a dedicated online event bringing together a diverse group of voices from across the research software community. The event began with a welcome from the SIG Chair, Kirsty Pringle followed by an invited talk from Martin Jukes on the NetDRIVE project and then lightning talks from community members Jim Procter, Giuditta Parolini, Jessica Huntley and Colin Suaze. Participants were then split into breakout groups to discuss the GREENER principles of Governance, Responsibility, Estimation and Energy Efficiency and Education. The launch provided a valuable space to connect, reflect, and begin shaping the direction of the Green RSE SIG together. View the full agenda here

Green computing with green algorithms (Loïc Lannelongue and Kirsty Pringle)

In this interactive Byte-Sized RSE session Loïc introduced the GREENER principles - a set of guidelines for environmentally sustainable computational science - which are aimed at helping participants to make informed decisions about energy-efficient computing practice and the Green Algorithms tool. In the practical session participants were guided through using Green Agorithms to calculate and compare the carbon footprint of various computational tasks.

Green RSE at RSECon24

The Green RSE SIG was launched following a successful community event at RSECon24.The Birds of a Feather session titled “Green RSEs? Building a community to reduce the environmental impacts of research software” featured talks from funder representatives and researchers working in this field. This was followed by an afternoon event to gather community input on priority areas. Participants were first asked to rank the most important fields to focus on, and then to identify those they believed were the easiest to achieve. Click here to read the blog about the event.
