π± Green RSE Award
We are pleased to report that the inagural Green RSE prize was awareded to Andy Turner (EPCC, University of Edinburgh) for his contribution to working to reduce the environmental impact of research software.
The Green RSE Award, sponsored by the Software Sustainability Institute and was awarded at RSECon25.
This award recognises individuals in the Research Software Engineering (RSE) community who are making exceptional contributions to environmental sustainability in research software.
Whether through energy-efficient coding, sustainable infrastructure choices, or advocacy for greener digital research practices, the Green RSE Award shines a spotlight on impactful work that often goes unseen.
Nominations were open to all members of the RSE community and werejudged on:

Judging Criteria

Environmental Benefit (1β5 points) How well does the work help reduce environmental impact? Consider whether it makes computing more energy efficient, reduces waste, or encourages more sustainable ways of working.

Creativity and New Ideas (1β5 points) Is the work original or creative in how it supports sustainability? Think about whether it introduces a new idea, approach, or way of solving a problem.

Community and Influence (1β5 points) Has the nominee helped others learn about or adopt greener practices? This might include sharing their work, raising awareness, or encouraging change in their team or community.

Sharing and Openness (1β5 points) Is the work easy for others to learn from or reuse? Consider whether it has been openly shared, documented, or made available in a way that others can build on.
