Welcome to the Green RSE Special Interest Group
In response to the urgency of the climate crisis, the UK government has committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2040, necessitating significant reductions across all sectors. While research plays a vital role in societal advancement and environmental protection, emissions from this sector also need to be reduced.
The Green RSE SIG is dedicated to building a collaborative community of research software engineers—and those interested in research software engineering—to work together on understanding how to reduce the environmental impact of research software.
Run in conjunction with the Society of Research Software Engineering, this new SIG will provide a platform for research software engineers to share knowledge, training, challenges, and ideas, allowing us to build an engaged and impactful community of practice.
Our Goals
- Identify and promote best practices for environmentally responsible research software.
- Collaborate on solutions that improve the efficiency of research code, reduce energy usage, and incorporate green practices into software lifecycle management.
- Advocate for green policies within research institutions, funding bodies, and broader communities.
- Champion the role of RSEs in reducing the environmental impact of research software.
The Green RSE SIG will hold regular meetings, workshops, and discussions to share findings, develop resources, and build a repository of green computing practices tailored to the unique needs of research software.
