Welcome!
The UK government aims to reach Net Zero emissions by 2040, which means cutting emissions across all sectors, even research. To achieve the Net Zero goals we will require rapid, large scale changes across the entire digital research infrastructure.
Our Green RSE special Interest Group (SIG) aims to build a supportive, collaborative community of research software engineers and researchers who code, to work together on understanding how to reduce the environmental impact of research software.
Run in conjunction with the Society of Research Software Engineering, this new SIG will provide a platform for research software engineers to share knowledge, training, challenges, and ideas, allowing us to build an engaged and impactful community of practice.
Our Goals
- Identify and promote best practices for environmentally responsible research software.
- Collaborate on solutions that improve the efficiency of research code, reduce energy usage, and incorporate green practices.
- Advocate for green policies within research institutions, funding bodies, and broader communities.
- Champion the role of RSEs in reducing the environmental impact of research software.
The Green RSE SIG holds regular meetings, workshops, and discussions to share findings, develop resources, and build a repository of green computing practices tailored to the unique needs of research software.
